NAAL is committed to making this website usable by as many people as possible, including people who use assistive technologies such as screen readers, screen magnifiers, keyboard-only navigation or speech recognition software.
This statement explains the accessibility measures currently in place on this website, the limitations we are aware of, and how to contact us if you encounter a barrier.
Measures Currently in Place
The following are implemented across this website today:
- Text alternatives for images. Every image on the site carries an alt attribute, with meaningful descriptions for images that convey information and empty alt text for purely decorative imagery, so screen readers can skip it.
- Reduced motion support. The site respects the operating-system setting prefers-reduced-motion. If you have asked your device to minimise animation, the rotating seal, reveal animations, image hover effects and the animated statistics counters are disabled and the final values are shown immediately.
- Visible keyboard focus. Focus styling is defined so that interactive elements can be seen when navigating with a keyboard.
- Clear heading structure. Each page uses a single main heading followed by a logical hierarchy of sub-headings, which supports navigation by headings in a screen reader.
- Declared page language. Each page declares its language, allowing screen readers to use the correct pronunciation.
- Landmark regions. Navigation and footer regions are marked up as landmarks.
- Labelled form fields. Every field in the proposal request form on our Contact page has a visible label, and the form includes accessible labelling for assistive technologies.
- Responsive, zoom-friendly layout. Pages reflow without horizontal scrolling down to small mobile screen widths, and text can be enlarged using browser zoom.
- Text-based content. Information is provided as real text rather than images of text.
Known Limitations
We would rather be candid about where this website currently falls short. We are aware of the following:
- No “skip to content” link. Keyboard users must currently tab through the header navigation on each page before reaching the main content.
- Main content landmark. Most pages do not yet expose a dedicated main landmark region, which would let assistive technology users jump directly to the primary content.
- Unlabelled controls. A small number of icon-only controls, including the mobile navigation toggle and the notice-bar close button, do not yet have accessible names, so they may be announced without a clear description.
- Colour contrast. We have not completed a formal contrast audit of every text and background combination across the site.
- Third-party components. Some interface components are provided by the plugins used to build this site, and their accessibility is partly determined by those providers.
Conformance Status
We use the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at Level AA as our reference standard. We have not yet completed a formal, independent accessibility audit of this website, and we therefore do not claim full conformance with WCAG 2.1 Level AA. The limitations listed above are known areas where the site does not currently meet that standard.
We would rather state this honestly than claim a level of conformance we have not verified.
Ongoing Work
Accessibility is treated as an ongoing responsibility rather than a one-off task. As this website is updated, we intend to address the limitations listed above and to consider accessibility when adding new pages, components and content.
